The Animals Need YOU!

The SPCA of Northern Virginia needs your help. While we would like for everyone who visits this website to adopt a needy dog or cat, we realize that not everyone is able to do so. Sometimes rental agreements, allergies, travel schedules or other constraints make adoption impossible. There are many other ways for you to support our work with the animals, though.  Click on the links below to find out more about these opportunities to help:

If you can open your home on a temporary basis, you could become a Foster Parent for a cat or dog. Our need for foster homes varies on a seasonal basis, but (for cats) is especially critical during kitten season in the spring. Please click here for a Cat Foster Home application. We do not currently have an online Dog Foster Home application; please call 703 799-9390 and leave a message if you are interested in fostering a dog.

Fostering cats & kittens

WHAT, WHY, HOW . . . Since the SPCA does not have a shelter facility, we rely on volunteer foster parents to care for our rescued cats. Foster parents have the unique opportunity to personally help our rescued cats and kittens heal both emotionally and physically from whatever trauma they suffered.
Many fosters are cat lovers who are stepping forward to “do the right thing” for homeless cats in their neighborhood. They are the cats whose owners moved away and simply abandoned them. They are the kittens born to stray cats. They are the cats lost, forgotten, and unanswered for by protective forces.
Why, you may ask, would someone volunteer to be a foster parent for an animal they don’t even own? Why would someone take on the responsibility for an animal someone else was supposed to take care of but didn’t? Why would anyone want to give up their spare bedroom, bathroom, etc. and take on responsibility for a pet they will eventually place in someone else's home?
People who choose to foster do so because they know that if they don’t step up to the plate, the fate of these animals is either sub-par living conditions or death. They feel good knowing they are making a difference, every minute and every day, in the life of an innocent soul; that a few months of inconvenience turn quickly into a rewarding, educational, challenging, and fun experience they will never forget. While it’s true that fosters do get very attached to their animals, they also find a special joy in sending a pet to a wonderful new family.
If you would like to learn more about the responsibilities expected of a foster parent, click here.
If you would like to learn more about becoming a foster parent for the SPCA please submit an online application.
We provide training and pay all medical costs! There are few acts more heartwarming than helping to save the life of a loving innocent creature in need.

Are you an eBay seller? Sales on eBay can now benefit the SPCA of Northern Virginia.  Individuals who sell items on eBay can now donate from 10 percent to 100 percent of the final sales price to help us rescue and find homes for abused, neglected and abandoned dogs and cats.

The donations are being made through MissionFish, a nonprofit organization specializing in online charitable auctions. Items for sale will be posted through MissionFish, and they will also appear on all other listings on eBay. Items will be identified on eBay as Giving Works items, and marked with a charity ribbon icon so buyers will know they are supporting a good cause. In fact, buyers tend to trust charity sellers more and these items sell for more than non-charity listings. In addition, Giving Works items appear in three eBay categories for the price of one: the category one selects, the eBay Giving Works category and on the MissionFish nonprofit homepage.

To take advantage of this new donation opportunity, follow these steps:
1. Visit MissionFish
2. Get registered
3. Choose an item to sell
4. Write an item title and description
5. List your item through MissionFish and indicate that it will benefit "SPCA of Northern Virginia"
6. Complete your transaction—MissionFish collects your donation and passes it on to us.

A bequest to the SPCA of Northern Virginia through your Will or Trust helps ensure that we can continue to carry out our mission of helping homeless and abused animals receive the care they need.

By remembering SPCA of Northern Virginia in your estate planning, you can leave a legacy that will benefit future generations of animals and help provide for our future work. The federal government encourages these gifts or bequests, by allowing an unlimited estate tax charitable deduction.

There are various methods for making such a bequest.

A specific bequest allows you to leave a specified gift in the form of a cash distribution. To make such a bequest use the following language: “I give, devise and bequeath to the SPCA of Northern Virginia, P.O. Box 100220, Arlington, VA 22210-3220 the sum of (insert amount) to be used for its general purposes.”

A residuary bequest allows you to leave a “remainder” of a percentage of your estate to the SPCA of Northern Virginia. To make a residuary use the following language: “I give, devise and bequeath to the SPCA of Northern Virginia, P.O. Box 100220, Arlington, VA 22210-3220 all (insert percentage amount) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, to be used for its general purposes.”

A contingency bequest allows you to make a gift contingent on certain circumstances. To make a contingency bequest use the following language: “If any of the above-named beneficiaries should predecease me, I hereby bequeath his or her share to the SPCA of Northern Virginia, P.O. Box 100220, Arlington, VA 22210-3220 to be used for its general purposes.”

If you already have a Will, you can use the suggested wording to write a codicil (an addendum) that names SPCA of Northern Virginia a beneficiary of your estate.
